Wake Forest Northeast Area Plan

Town of Wake Forest | Wake Forest, NC | August 2020 – Present

Project Background

After the Civil War, many African Americans settled in northeast Wake Forest with what is believed to be a freedman’s school established there. Later, in 1926, the DuBois School was established to provide public education to African Americans. Many area descendants have remained in the community to this day. The Town of Wake Forest is rapidly expanding and wants to ensure that the vision of the northeast community members is reflected in its economic, land, and social policies moving forward.

P3 Deliverables

P3 developed a comprehensive public involvement plan and outreach strategy, including the identification of area businesses, community organizations religious entities, public institutions, and housing complexes to be included in the project. This plan was reviewed and approved by a stakeholder advisory group and includes public meetings, stakeholder interviews, surveys, and communications through a variety of virtual and traditional methods. Throughout the project, P3 aims to engage a representative sample of the study area in order to ensure that the feedback collected accurately reflects the concerns, perspectives, and visions of Northeast residents.

For the project kickoff, P3 developed a mailer that contained basic information about the project and included a paper copy of the survey to be distributed to all study area residents. This paper survey was also distributed through local community organizations, and drop boxes were provided throughout the community to collect completed surveys. Between the paper survey and online survey, there were over 100 participants who shared input on community assets and opportunities for improvements.

For the second phase, P3 facilitated small group activities during multiple Visioning Workshops. These workshops were live simulcasted on a local television network to provide residents without access or skill with technology a way to learn more about the project, including future ways to get involved.
