P3 2021 Year in Review

It’s that time of the year to reflect on the year past and look toward the new year to come. Please indulge us as we review some of the highlights from P3’s year. We’re so grateful for all the opportunities that 2021 provided!

P3 Awards

P3 2021 Marvin Collins Engagement Award Winner

P3 was honored to receive the NC American Planning Association 2021 Marvin Collins Engagement award for our work on the City of Raleigh Community Engagement Process Development! During this project, we had record breaking demographic participation in a City of Raleigh survey. We were then thrilled to create an equitable engagement process and staff training for City of Raleigh Planning and Development Department using the feedback we received from the public.

2600+ Responses Across 28 Polling Stations

P3 Polling Stations

We took our 2020 innovation and stepped it up to the next level! This fall we used unmanned polling stations to collect data from transit riders throughout Wake County.

During the four week collection period, these 28 Wake Bus Plan polling stations gathered over 2,600 responses to three questions.

P3 Projects

Throughout 2021, P3 completed 6 projects and was awarded 21 new projects! We were excited to not only continue our work on transportation projects and small area plans, but also venture into the world of affordable housing development and government funding allocation.

Affordable Housing Development

P3 began working with Community Housing Partners and the Town of Chapel Hill in August of 2021 on the Trinity Court Redevelopment project. This project seeks to provide more affordable housing in Chapel Hill and incorporate the needs and vision of the complex’s future residents.

While it was not without its challenges, we were excited to offer live simultaneous interpretation during our virtual meetings in Spanish, Arabic, and Burmese! This gave future residents a chance to learn about the redevelopment project in their native tongue.

We also got to try out a new-to-us tool: Mentimeter. The Mentimeter platform allowed us to collect real-time data from participants on their preferences for the future complex. The project team would explain different options and then residents could choose which option they liked best. So cool!

Government Funding Allocation

In September, P3 began working with the Guilford County government to help in their $104 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding allocation process. Guilford County wants to hear from as many residents as possible to help in the decision-making process.

To help educate residents on eligible ARPA fund uses, we made this nifty video that’s hosted on the PublicInput.com virtual open house and survey page. We’re looking forward to using this initial data to help inform a prioritization phase in February!

P3 Meetings – We set a company record!

In 2020, many projects were put on hold or avoided public meetings. In 2021, we got to do more of one of the things we do best: host public meetings! It was a busy year, just look at the stats:

P3 2021 Year in Review Stats - 61 total engagement meetings, 21 new projects

That’s a lot of meetings! We’re starting off the new year with 16 on-going projects (and 5 meetings in the first two weeks of January), so let’s see if we can break this record in 2022.

New Certifications

In 2021, P3 became certified DBE/MBE in Florida and Virginia! These certifications are in addition to our existing DBE/MBE in North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and Massachusetts.

Public Participation Partners is Certified DBE/MBE in NC, SC, MA, MI, FL, and VA

MetroQuest Webinar

In May, P3’s Principal, Simone Robinson, was invited to participate as a public engagement expert in a Forum on Equity and Public Engagement for Transportation Planning. Simone drew upon her ten years as a public engagement professional to provide accessible tips and processes for equitable community engagement during transportation planning. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out the webinar recording.

Looking forward to 2022!

If 2021 is any indication, 2022 is going to be a year full of even more opportunities to equitably engage the public! We are so grateful for all of our partners, project teams, and all the people who showed up to participate.

Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a joyous new year!
